Superman Returns

A day or two ago, I watch the teaser trailer for Superman Returns, the new Superman movie coming out this summer. It really appealed to me for some reason, and then I realized why. During the trailer, you hear Superman's father saying this. I am quoting exactly...

"Even though you have been raised as a human being, you are not one of them. They could be a great people, Kal-El; they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all -- their capacity for good -- I am sending you, my only son."

The messianic overtones in this are inescapable. This is seriously one of the best movie trailers I've ever seen.

I DO realize that not everything in that statement is biblical. It's not supposed to be...it's a movie. However, not everything in The Chronicles of Narnia is completely biblical, and it still can be used of God for His purposes, just like everything else. I could restate what his father says very slightly differently and make it sound biblical...

"You have been raised as a human being...They [will] be a great people, Kal-El; however, they [do not] wish to be. [I am choosing them as a people of My own.] They ... lack the Light to show the Way. For this reason...I am sending You, My only Son."

First of all, let me just say that I know this is only a part of the gospel. However, I believe this movie has some very good possible opportunites to share the gospel with people. I kept out the "capacity for good" part, though we DO have the capacity for good...we simply need the Spirit of God to carry it out. "For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." (Philippians 2:13) I simply don't believe that that is the reason "above all" for God sending His Son. Also, Jesus didn't need to be told that He was more than human. In fact, He was human AND God.

Also, for more on the topic of Superman's name, Kal-El, read this.

(I may end up adding more information about this later, seeing as I wrote it quickly, and have already edited it multiple times.)
